I vow to write a science fiction/fantasy novel this year (Go thou and do likewise)
This is my first post on this new blog. It’s not as if I haven’t blogged before. I have a number of blogs over at Blogger, but this is my first one here at Today.com.
The subject of this blog is writing, and the writing of science fiction and fantasy in particular. For many years I have wanted to write a science fiction or fantasy novel and get it published. I’ve written a lot of novel beginnings, but unfortunately no endings. But this year, I vow, things are going to change. This blog will in part serve to chronicle my efforts this year, and to provide aid to others engaged in the same struggle.
I hope others of you out there with science fiction and/or fantasy novel projects will find this blog and participate by adding comments about the writing process in general and your own writing project in particular. If we all cheer each other on, maybe we will all have finished novels at the end of the year.
Every would-be writer has a variety of challenges to overcome on the writing road. One of mine is a condition called Asperger’s Syndrome , which is a form of autism. The result of having AS is that one is unable to pick up normal social cues, and as a result one can tend to be socially isolated. This can lead to a massive lack of self-confidence. In my particular case, there are fears that since I am socially isolated and no one seems to want to be a friend, perhaps that will carry over to my writing and no one will want to read my work. This is a silly fear, I guess, since many writers throughout history are believed to have had Asperger’s Syndrome— Herman Melville, for example, author of Moby Dick.
My writing adventure begins today, and as my first day’s goal I am going to be organizing the notes and other paperwork for not one but two writing projects. One is to be titled ‘Kolbe’s World’ and is a sci-fi work, and the second is ‘Among the Lost’ and is fantasy. Getting organized is I believe an important part of this writing adventure. A novel is a massive project, unlike the blog entries I write. So I have to have a system in order to keep my act together.
This year, I have vowed, will be the year I write a novel. If you have made or are making a similar vow, please do drop me a comment.
